You’ve checked off all the obvious stuff: extra-long twin sheets, a shower caddy, school supplies, and clothes. But there are some other unglamorous items almost every family forgets until a midnight emergency hits: a fully stocked medicine and essentials kit.

Here’s the thing nobody tells you about sending a kid clear across the country: it isn’t really the phone call at 2 AM that is going to get you. It’s what comes after it. You can probably handle the tears, heck, I will probably be crying too. What’s harder is being thousands of miles away and realizing there is genuinely nothing I can do — I can’t drive over with soup, run to the pharmacy, or even picture where their nearest drugstore is. All I can do is talk them through it from a couch on the other coast. I already know this part is going to be hard on me — the day she calls and isn’t feeling well, I’ll probably be crying, right along with her, looking up airline fares, wanting to jump on a plane and hating that I can’t just fix it. A well-stocked kit is the one thing that closes that gap a little. It can’t replace you, but it means the fever, the blister, the sore throat gets handled in the next five minutes instead of waiting on me to problem-solve from across the country.

Because here’s the truth about an 18-year-old on their own for the first time with a 101-degree fever at midnight. They will likely do one of three things:

Wrap themselves in a blanket and accept their fate.

Call you crying because they can’t remember if Advil is the one for pain or the one for their stomach.

Try to cure a sinus infection with leftover pizza and sheer willpower.

A pre-packed kit heads all three off at the pass. I feel that it’s genuinely one of the most useful graduation gifts you can give — and it works just as well for a kid headed to a dorm as one headed out of town, where a well-stocked kit can save a trip to sick call for something minor.

I built three of these this year: one for my daughter, one for her best friend — both headed off to college — and one for a family friend who just left for the Navy. All three kits share the same core list, with a few swaps depending on who they were for (more on that below). Each one came together for about $116, and lives in a 47-pocket hanging organizer so nothing gets lost in a drawer.

Here’s exactly what to put in one, where to find the best deals, and how I tweaked it for each kid.

💊 The Pharmacy

The goal was to cover every basic ailment so they wouldn’t have to stumble to a drugstore at 2 AM. Because when you don’t feel good, you don’t want to have to go down to the first floor and get a DoorDash delivery, much less try to figure out how to get to CVS with no car.

Pain relievers: Tylenol and Advil.

Tip: Put a big, obvious label on the Tylenol reminding them to check the acetaminophen content in every other cold medicine they take. No more than 4g of acetaminophen a day, total, across all products — write it in Sharpie if you have to – it can actually be deadly.

Cold & flu lineup: DayQuil and NyQuil, Mucinex, Afrin sinus spray, and cough drops for a sore throat.

Stomach savers: Pepto Bismol and Tums — dining hall food may take some adjusting to.

Allergy relief: Benadryl, which also serves as a first-response option for an unexpected allergic reaction.

🩹 First Aid & Aches

Between crossing a sprawling campus on foot every day, again no car for my freshman, blisters and sore muscles are basically guaranteed.

Blister and wound care: Moleskin patches (10-packs on Amazon are the best value), Band-Aids, gauze pads and wrap, and Neosporin.

Muscle relief: BioFreeze and instant cold packs.

Athletic or cloth tape: for sprains, or just to secure a bandage that won’t stay put.

The two things people forget: a thermometer and a real pair of metal tweezers — skip the flimsy plastic ones; splinters and blisters need something with actual grip.

Personalized Touches: Maybe a gift card to their favorite restaurant if they need a pick-me-up, their favorite candy, or for my friend’s kit headed to the Navy, I swapped the plain Band-Aids for military-themed ones. A little personality goes a long way, especially when you are going somewhere new and could be missing home.

💧 Daily Health & Prevention

Keep their immune system in fighting shape before it has to actually fight something.

Multivitamins: gummy vitamins are the safest bet for actually getting taken. (Gruns Gummy vitamins are a hit in our house.)

Hydration packets: essential for recovering from a cold — or a late night

Eye drops: for late-night studying and screen fatigue, or just dust and long days outdoors.

✂️ The “I Didn’t Know I Needed That” Drawer

The random household items they’ll absolutely need and never think to pack themselves.

Tools: scissors, safety pins, nail clippers, a nail file, and a mini sewing kit (missing buttons happen).

Hygiene: Q-tips, Purell, Chapstick, and condoms — just put them in, don’t make eye contact, let it happen.

Dorm Room Hack: laundry clips double perfectly as chip clips, and a Tide-to-go stick lives in every pocket for a reason.

Boy’s kit vs. girl’s kit: The core list above stayed the same across all three kits, but I made a couple of small swaps depending on who it was for. For my daughter and her friend, I added a few hair ties and clips — easy to leave out if your kid doesn’t have long hair.

🍪 A Little Comfort

Tuck in their favorite chocolate, a pack of cookies, or a snack they’d never buy for themselves. In our family, it’s always a bag of “emergency Skittles” — an inside joke, but also genuinely useful if anyone’s blood sugar tanks. Nothing softens a bad week quite like a sugar rush and a reminder that someone’s thinking about them.

For the girls’ kits, I also tucked in a couple of chocolate miniatures — mostly with that time of the month in mind, since a little chocolate on hand goes a long way on a bad day.

🛒 Where to Actually Buy This Stuff

Buying everything in individual travel sizes at a local pharmacy will cost you a fortune. Shop smarter:

Costco for the bulk items: 3-packs of Neosporin and Afrin, 2-packs of BioFreeze, eye drops, and vitamins.

Amazon for multi-packs of scissors, moleskin patches, and cold packs.

Walmart and Dollar Tree for the small stuff — chapstick, nail clippers, garbage bags (which, let’s be honest, also work as puke bags).

Build two or three kits at once while you’re at it — it’s an easy, appreciated gift for every new grad in your life this season.

The Full List

I tracked every single item, price, and store for all three kits, mostly so I wouldn’t forget anything for the next one — figured I’d share it in case it saves someone else the trial-and-error. Full list with prices, stores, and links to what I actually bought is below.

My kits came out to about $116 each; I made three at the same time, and I had leftovers to stock our own cabinet.

If you end up putting one of these together for your own kid, I’d genuinely love to hear what you’d add to the list.

Public File: College First Aid & Essentials Kit Shopping List

A few of the links in this post and on the attached shopping list are affiliate links, which means I may earn a small commission if you shop through them — at no extra cost to you.
